STRATEGIES FOR PREVENTING DOWNTIME OF HYDRAULIC CYLINDERS AND SYSTEMS

In recent years, the design, performance and capability of hydraulic equipment has improved significantly, but so too has the need for ongoing maintenance.

And just as equipment has become more sophisticated, so too have the costs of maintenance and repair - let alone replacement

A proactive and preventative maintenance programme is the only way to minimise costs and optimise the service life of an hydraulic system says a leader in precision engineering, Perth based machine shop, EPM.

The most important element of hydraulic systems management is prevention, with daily checks required to detect any small problems early so that they don’t become big problems later.   Broken down into more detail, the proactive maintenance routine should cover fluid cleanliness, temperature and viscosity; ensuring that all systems are commissioned and set to the manufacturer’s specifications, adhering to a routine of preventative machined components replacement and in the case of failure, analysing what went wrong.

Just as proactive maintenance will extend the working life of a vehicle and ensure it runs at optimum levels, so too will proactive preventative maintenance extend the effective working life of your hydraulic system - but it will take a little extra time and effort.  The effort will always be rewarded by long-term cost savings however, such as improved use of machined components, less downtime etc.

Contaminated fluid is a hydraulic system’s worst enemy - and, according to a leader in hydraulic machining in Perth, EPM, implementing a contamination control system to prevent problems is probably the most important element of proactive maintenance.   There are two types of contaminants, namely particulate (eg dirt, sand, metal) and chemical (eg water, air) - and it’s vital that the threat of contamination is limited as far as possible through preventative maintenance.

When there is a system breakdown however, it is vital to use a tried and tested cnc machining service where you will be guaranteed to get expert advice, the highest quality products and service and experienced engineering capabilities.
