When you renew a domain name, do not renew from emails that are NOT from your current domain registrar or your web design company.
We recommend in general that you should renew with your existing provider, through your web design company or with another reputable known provider.
To find out where you purchased your domain name from and then to renew it...
1. Conduct a whois search to see who you are registered with using www.domaintools.com (Watch My Video on Whois Lookup)
2. Go to the registrars web site and look for a manage domains or renew domains link
3. Find the retrieve password page and enter your domain name to have the password email sent to back to you or to see where it is sent.
4. If the domain password is not sent to you then email the person that it is sent to and ask them to send it to you
5. If the email doesn't exist and the message vapourises leaving you at a dead end then email or phone or fax the registrar and find out what paperwork you need to switch the email to your email from the one that doesn't work.
6. If you do get the password, login to the registrar and renew with them
7. Follow up until you get what you want and do it a long time before the domain expires
8. An expired domain can wreck your search engine optimisation efforts so please monitor this.
P.S. Try and keep all your domains registered together to keep management under control
Make sure you use an email address as your contact that you are very unlikely to ever change. Your business email address is far superior to the ones from ISPs which people tend to change every few years. They then can't get their domain renewals.
The alternative is to let your web design company like GTP manage your domains under a central account for piece of mind.
You will see it makes it urgent to renew your domain. The problem is that it's not from who the domain was originally registered with and the prices to switch are very inflated (Plus you can't trust their ethics). This tactic prays on busy or unsuspecting staff.
