We've recently been receiving a number of enquiries from clients about a domain name scam operating out of Hong Kong. This scam has been around for a while, but seems to be particularly active at the moment so we thought we'd remind everyone about the details.
The operators claim to be a Domain Name Registrar located in Hong Kong or sometimes other parts of China. They scattershot an email to as many companies as possible claiming that someone is trying to register the Hong Kong or Chinese version of their domain name, and then offer the opportinity to "secure" the domain name for a highly inflated price. A typical scam email of this type resembles the following...
Dear CEO or Manager,
We are a Global Domain Name Registration Center in Hong Kong, mainly dealing with domain name registration and internet intellectual property rights protection. On Apr.6,2010 we received a formal application from a local company of your country who is applying to register some domain names with the keyword "company name" as the keyword. After investigation,we find that you are the original user of the keyword. Such similar domain cases may involve your trademark and company name, and may cause website confusion and conflicts. For a responsible attitude, we inform you here and ask for your opinion. If you don't mind,we will finish registration for the third company.
Look forward to your reply.
